Carrier Free

What does CF mean?

CF stands for Carrier Free (CF). We typically add Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) as a carrier protein to our recombinant proteins. Adding a carrier protein enhances protein stability, increases shelf-life, and allows the recombinant protein to be stored at a more dilute concentration. The carrier free version does not contain BSA.

What formulation is right for me?

In general, we advise purchasing the recombinant protein with BSA for use in cell or tissue culture, or as an ELISA standard. In contrast, the carrier free protein is recommended for applications, in which the presence of BSA could interfere.

Background: SLITRK5

SLITRK5 (Slit and Trk-like family member 5; also known as LRR-containing protein 11) is a member of the SLITRK family of proteins (1, 2). This family currently includes six members, all of which contain a slit-like extracellular region and a Trk-like cytoplasmic region (3). Mouse SLITRK5 is a type I transmembrane (TM) protein that is 957 amino acids (aa) in length. It contains a putative 40 aa signal sequence, a 624 aa extracellular domain (ECD), a 21 aa TM segment, and a 272 aa cytoplasmic region. The ECD is characterized by the presence of two leucine-rich domains (LRD) that resemble those found in SLITs. Each LRD  contains seven and eight leucine-rich repeats (LRRs), respectively. Mouse SLITRK5 shares 97% and 99% aa identity with Human and Rat SLITRK5, respectively. The exact function of the LRRs is not known. They are assumed to mediate protein-protein-interactions (4). The cytoplasmic region contains two conserved, potential phosphorylation sites at Tyr833 and Tyr917, plus a TrkA-like tyrosine phosphorylation site (YLxxL) at Tyr945. SLITRK5 is expressed on embryonic neurons of the hippocampus (pyramidal layer) and thalamus (3). SLITRK5 was also shown to be expressed in hematopoietic stem cells, leukemias, and subsets of endothelial cells (5). Loss of SLITRK5 leads to manifestation of OCD-like behaviors in mice. SLITRK-5 was identified as an essential molecule at corticostriatal synapses (6). More recent studies have shown that SLITRK5 mediates BDNF-dependent biological functions through direct interaction with TrkB receptors. SLITRK5 primarily interacts with a trans-synaptic binding partner, protein tyrosine phosphatase δ (PTPδ), but upon BDNF stimulation it shifts to cis-interactions with TrkB (7).
