Overview

Parietal Epithelial Cell Overview

Parietal epithelial cells (PEC) are squamous cells that make up the structure of Bowman’s capsule. PEC form junctions with podocytes at the vascular pole of the capsule and with tubular epithelium at the urinary pole. PEC share the same developmental lineage as podocytes and function as progenitors for nonproliferative podocytes. Plasma leakage through a damaged glomerular filtration barrier allows serum mitogens to contact PEC and induce hyperplasia and the formation of cellular crescents. Crescent formation can lead to obstruction of urine flow and nephron degeneration. Other kidney disorders involving PEC include collapsing glomerulopathy, rapidly progressing glomerulonephritis (RPGN), and glomerulonecrosis.
